The Planetology departement should create maps of the moons and planets.
Mapping and map making
At this moment there is no coordination on mapping and/or map making. Allthough it is fun to map and see your own results after some time, it also is very time consuming. In my opinion, mapping all the planets and moons should be one of the spearheads of this departement. The Kerbonaut section of this university should have the option to investigate good landing sites on every panet and moon and, if requested, we should be able to provide scientific advice on good and interesting landing sites. This is impossible without proper and detailed maps, i therefor would like to suggest creating those maps jointly a.s.a.p.

No. Allowing all access to the data from all people takes away from the only thing the Planetology division is about. I can just google "Eve KSP Wikipeadia" and I'll know the exact stationary orbit and etc.
Withholding this Information actually gives some fun and some power to the division. Where you hold something other divisions don't know. Unless requested, it just makes it more enjoyable, if this implemented, we might aswell get rid of the Planetology.
I will be expecting a reply shortly.

Re: Mapping and map making
It won't come as a surprise that i don't agree with you. Your approach is understandable from the perspective of a division within a company bu it counter the perspective of a university. A university is founded on the bases of researching subjects and then sharing the data and findings with others.
Your assumption that sharing data with others is detrimental to the fun (???) and power (???) of the panetology division is non-valid. It would have been valid if the subforums were only accesable by the the groups for which those subforums were created.
Besides, what is the "fun" and "power" of discovering things and then keeping it to yourself? If this was truely the purpose of this university then i wouldn't even have joined it.

I agree with Cardinal the whole point of a university is the pursuit of knowledge, we should not be like this
Just my opinion.

Re: Mapping and map making
The responsibility of creating and analyzing the maps is for the planetologists. I find it is actually quite easy to create a full map, though. One probe with ISA mapsat at polar orbit and 50x warp can make a full map if you leave it for a while. Making maps is necessary, but pretty easy.

He means there is no fun as in the sense of...
Let me put it this way.
What if I started asking the Kerbonautical Division to do all the physics things, And the Physics Division would not have purpose. (And vice versa)
Or if I just Google the physics stuff and Planetology stuff and thus those divisions will be invalid.

Re: Mapping and map making
Sorry, i must be very dim but i really don't get it.
What do YOU think the University of Kerbol is about?
I'll start off with the idea i have about it.
To my opinion the UoK is the place where everybody, members of the UoK or players of KSP, can search for information on all kinds of subjects. Information gathered by the membered is freely accessable in the form of publications in the appropriate subforums. The University performs (should perform) research on all kinds of subjects, partly to discover things, partly to confirm things. A lot of information is already available on the internet, agreed. However, that information is often incomplete and almost never confirmed by experiments and/or the UoK.
Take for instance the maps. There is a thread in the KSP forum which contains all the maps at about 400 x 200 pixels resolution. Hardly worth the effort of downloading or printing. The UoK should (in my opinion) provide topographical maps of at least 1800 pixels.

Executive decision.
All data is released to everyone AFTER the study that it came from is complete.
Primus, power is not something divisions strive for. Excellence in their field is.

Re: Mapping and map making
Anyway, if this does go through, it would be a very interesting find to see these pictures of topography in a decent resolution.
I also would've asked if I could build the probe, but then I realised that I ask that question way too much and I need to take some anti-probe building pills (aka tic tacs)

Re: Mapping and map making
Everyone can cross over a bit. i.e. Planetologists can build ships to go places, Physicists to study them, Engineers just get to blow things up full-time
Re: Mapping and map making
I would love to see climate and elevation maps, I still want to know the highest mountains, I'm planning on going for a hike ! . I also want to know if altitude and where you are on a planet affects temperature for instance is it really cold at the poles ?
